STUNTS, STARS & LEGENDS - August 2015

Jack Williams
Jack’s father, George Williams, was a Montana cowboy and his mother Paris Williams was a world-Champion trick rider and stunt woman. Jack got his first job in the movies on a horse at the age of 4, being tossed from one rider to another in “The Flaming Forest” in 1926. He was a polo player and returned in motion pictures doing stunt work in 1936 for “Daniel Boone” and “The Charge of the Light Brigade. World War II interrupted his movie career. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He returned after the war and for six decades he doubled for or worked with Errol Flynn, John Wayne, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Ronald Reagan, James Stewart, Gary Cooper, Fess Parker, Andie Murphy, Richard Widmark, Robert Taylor, Yul Brynner, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Lee Marvin, Glenn Ford, Charlton Heston , Gregory Peck, Clint Eastwood, William Holden and Kirk Douglas. He even doubled for Olivia de Havilland, Greer Garson, Sophia Loren, Lucille Ball and Angie Dickinson.

Some of the films he stunted in were “The Last Outpost”, “Bend of the River”, “The Far Country”, “Yellowstone Kelly”, “Rio Bravo”, “The Alamo”, “The Magnificent Seven”, “Merrill’s Marauders”, “How the West Was Won”, “Cheyenne Autumn”, “Major Dundee”, “Cat Ballou”, “The War Wagon”, and many more. Williams owed his success to his horse “Coco”. Williams was best known for having trained his horse to fall dramatically at a given spot as if it had taken a bullet or arrow. “As a stuntman, life’s an adventure,” he said. “It’s wonderful, but so fragile. You remember in ‘The War Wagon’ where they’ve got the dynamite shaking and it could go off any second? That’s the way life is.”

Movies Made in Moab:
Dark Command (1940)
It starred John Wayne, Claire Trevor and Walter Pidgeon, loosely based on Quantrill’s Raiders during the American Civil War ... directed by Raoul Walsh. It is the only movie where John Wayne and Roy Rogers appear together. It also features George “Gabby” Hayes as Wayne’s sidekick.
Story: Mary McCloud (Claire Trevor) marries a seemingly peaceful Kansas schoolteacher William Cantrell (Walter Pidgeon), before finding out that he harbors a dark secret. He is actually an outlaw leader who attacks both sides in the Civil War for his own profit. After capturing a wagon loaded with Confederate uniforms, he decides to pass himself off as a Confederate officer. Her naive, idealist brother Fletcher (Roy Rogers) joins what he believes is a Rebel guerrilla force. Meanwhile, Cantrell’s stern, but loving mother (Marjorie Main) refuses to accept any of her son’s ill-gotten loot. A former suitor of Mary’s, Union supporter Bob Seton (John Wayne), is captured by Cantrell and scheduled for execution. After being rescued by a disillusioned Fletcher McCloud, Seton and Mary Cantrell race to the town of Lawrence (site of an actual infamous Quantrill-led massacre) to warn the residents of an impending attack by Cantrell’s gang.
